The UK Information Commissioner’s office (ICO) has made a huge effort to ensure businesses across the United Kingdom are aware of the impending changes to Data Protection Regulations.
However, many business owners will be wondering “Will the GDPR affect me?” or “I have a micro business, how do I know this will impact me?” Maybe even “As we will be leaving the EU anyway; does it really matter?”
While there may not be a straight forward answer to every GDPR question, we can answer one definitively; the ICO has publicly announced that the UK will be adopting the GDPR rules despite ‘BREXIT’.
If you are thinking about the possible impact to your business, that’s a good place to start and to help you determine whether GDPR is applicable to you we’ve prepared a checklist of questions. If you answer yes to at least one of the questions below you may need to consider seeking specialist advice on how to implement GDPR in your business.
There are some exemptions for small businesses with less than 250 staff processing personal data, however this is a grey area that needs more clarification. In the meantime, it would be prudent for your organisation to take the necessary steps to implementing business processes and controls that will ensure you are GDPR compliant come May 25, 2018 when the regulation comes into effect across Europe and the UK.
